Morphogen Nutrition is a true dark horse in the supplement industry. Founded by Ben Hartman, the brand seems to always be out on the cutting edge of athletic supplement formulation. We’ve had the pleasure of hosting Ben on the PricePlow podcast twice now.
The first time, we explored his philosophy when it comes to excellence and what it means in the context of the supplement world. Later, we had Ben come on and discuss the more artful side of the industry, where he gave us his thoughts on Morphogen’s approach with respect to branding and packaging.
This month, exciting things are happening at Morphogen – their flagship pre-workout formula, AlphaGen, is evolving.
The All New Alphagen
We’ve written about AlphaGen before. It’s certainly a bold, adventurous pre-workout formula. Some time in the middle of August, 2023, Morphogen is releasing a newer, more tailored version of AlphaGen. There are quite a few formula differences, but many of the key components from the original are sticking around.

- Lower tyrosine, citrulline, Advantra dosages
- Addition of betaine, beta alanine, DMAE, and PEA
- Elimination of velvet bean extract, eria jarensis extract, and huperzine A

Morphogen AlphaGen – How It Works
- L-citrulline (6000mg) is one of the most scientifically-backed pump-inducing ingredients on the market. By increasing nitric oxide (NO) levels via conversion to arginine, citrulline will leave your muscles popping.
- Beta-alanine (3200mg) is an ergogenic aid, helping to improve performance by combining with L-histidine to form carnosine. Beta alanine is the source of the famous tingle found in many pre-workout formulas.
- Betaine anhydrous (2500mg), or trimethylglycine, is another ergogenic aid that helps increase adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is critical to cellular function, energy, and exercise performance.
- L-tyrosine (2000mg) is an extremely interesting ingredient, particularly for its beneficial effects on the thyroid gland and the production of neurotransmitters.
- DMAE (750mg), or dimethylaminoethanol, stimulates the choline receptors, potentially increasing the amount of choline that is usable by the nervous system. As such, it can help level mood and relieve emotional disorders.
- PEA (500mg), also known as palmitoylethanolamide, is a fatty acid that can promote anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. As such, it is a great tool for recovery.
- Caffeine (400mg) needs no introduction. By blocking the actions of adenosine, caffeine can not only promote energy and performance, but also boosts metabolism. AlphaGen boasts a total of 400 milligrams of caffeine – which is on the stronger side – utilizing a combination of caffeine anhydrous and caffeine citrate.
- Cocoa extract (200mg) is standardized for theobromine, which decreases hunger, improves mood, and enhances energy. By inhibiting adenosine, it can improve overall motivation and alertness.
- Advantra Z Bitter Orange Extract (100mg) is standardized synephrine, which is superb at melting fat and boosting performance. Synephrine, in combination with caffeine, has been shown to increase weightlifting volume by as much as 10% in a session.
- L-theanine (100mg) acts like a neurotransmitter in the brain, promoting an anxiolytic effect. When taken with caffeine, it can smooth out the energy and leave you with a clean, pure focus.

This newest version of AlphaGen can best be described as streamlined. It’s leaner, meaner, and will leave you ready to move. In some areas, such as with tyrosine and citrulline, AlphaGen is now a bit more moderate. That said, it’s still packed with 400 milligrams of caffeine – a solid, hefty dose – as well as a couple new ingredients like betaine, PEA and DMAE.
Ben and the team at Morphogen did what they do best: iterate. Morphogen takes a scientific approach to formulation: they test constantly. They’re always looking to see what works, and what doesn’t. AlphaGen is the product of engineering rigor.
